How to Play I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
For the basics of this song, you’ll need your guitar in standard tuning. And capo on the fourth fret of your guitar. Then you’ll need to know five chord shapes. The five chord shapes are G, D/F#, Em, C, and A/C#.
Intro/Verse 1/Chorus 1 Chords
Now there are four chords for this chord progression and those four chords are G, D/F#, Em, and C. The strumming pattern got to have a shuffle feel to it. So, the strumming pattern is going to be like DUDUDUDU with a shuffle feel. In this pattern, all beats are in equal lengths. The down strum will be slightly longer than the upstroke, giving it the shuffle rhythm.
For each chord, you’re going to do those two strumming patterns but also palm muting. Now to palm mute this. And you’ll want to concentrate on plucking the top two or three bass notes of each chord. You don’t really want to hit the others by doing so; you’re going to give it that nice tropical feel.
How to Play I’m Yours by Jason Mraz โ Intro Riff
For the lead part of the intro, you’re going to start with the pinky and ring finger on the 3rd fret relative to the capo on the first and second strings. You’re going to hit these two notes together and then slide them up to the fifth fret. After you slide to the fifth fret, you’re going to go back down to the third fret. And hit up again. Now, the next time around you do the slide but then when you come back down you’re going to be hitting the third fret of the second string and the second fret of the first string with your middle finger.
The third time around, we’re going to change it up a little bit; you’re going to be using your ring finger here, still on the third fret of the second string, but you’re going to take your index finger and put that on the second fret of the third string. And you’re going to hit those two notes together and slide them up two frets like that, and then you let go are these two fingers, and you’re going to hit the third and second strings open. And then the last little bit, you would just be hitting the second and third strings open, and then you’ll quickly mute it, and then you’ll hit them again, but then you’ll hammer onto the first fret of the second string with your index finger.

Combined Intro Riff
If you want a little challenge for the intro you can combine the lead and the rhythm together and it sounds really cool if you’re playing by yourself. So to start this off, we’d have pinky and ring finger on the third fret of the 1st and 2nd strings, and we’re going to slide these up to the fifth fret with an upstroke. After you’ve gone to the fifth fret, you’re then going to strum down on the G chord. So, your strum on that chord is going to be on the one and then we’re going to go back to the down-up down-up down-up down-up palm-muted strumming pattern on the two beat up until the three beats of the next count of four.
Then on the next one but you’re going to hit the D/F# and all the strings on that chord. Then we’re going to continue with the palm muting pattern on the to-beat and continue on to the three beats on the next can of four. And then on our next up strum after this pattern, we’re going to be hitting the second and third strings sliding them up two frets. And then on the next one beat we’re going to be hitting our Em chord.
We’re going to be doing the same thing after that chord coming in with a palm-muted down-up strumming pattern on the two beat up until the three beat onto the next count. The next up strum, we’re going to hit the second and third strings, then for the four-beat, we’re going to hit the bass notes again, and then for the end beat after the four, we’re going to go back to the second and third strings.
For the C chord
For the C chord, we strum all the strings on the one beat one, and then from the two beats to the three beat of the next count, we go back to the palm-muted strumming pattern. And then we go back to the third fret of our first and second strings and slide them up to the fifth fret. The second time around that you play that for the C, you’re not going to do that slide from third fret to fifth fret. You’re going to just continue on with a down-up strumming pattern until the end of that chord. And that’s it for the combined intro.
How to Play I’m Yours by Jason Mraz โ Verse 2 Chords
Now we get to the second verse, and there are two lines of chords. The first line is going to be repeated twice and then our second line of chords is just one chord strummed once. The first lines are very familiar, so that chord progression goes G, D/F#, Em, and C. We’re going to use a different strumming pattern here. The strumming pattern is going to go: D-D-D-DU-UDUDUDU. One thing we would suggest is that you palm mute the first two strums. It’s going to give it that cool tropical feel again. But that’s just a suggestion, so you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to.
Bridge Chords
The bridge has two lines of chords. So, the first line goes G, D/F#, Em, and D/F# again. And the second line of chords is C and then A/C# chords. Now we’re going to use the same strumming pattern here: D-D-D-DU-UDUDUDU. You can palm mute the first two strums if you want to as well.
Now, after the G to the D/F#, that’s going to be in one strumming pattern in the Em to the D/F# in another strumming pattern. The C and the A/C# have their own strumming patterns. Now the point at which you change from the G to the D/F# is going to be on the second up strum of the strumming pattern, same with the Em to the D/F#.
The rest of the song is just the generic chord progression the G, D/F#, Em to C with D-D-D-DU-UDUDUDU strumming pattern.
